Boston US based Northeastern University was looking for a launchpad to expand its global network of campuses and so the New College of the Humanities (NCH @ Northeastern) was born. The brief asked for multi-flexible and agile learning & workspaces for students and staff, a new entrance and a new central show piece staircase connecting the ground to first floor. Light reflecting of shiny materials and robe type feature lighting pays homage to Devon House’s location in St. Katharine Docks along the River Thames. A subtle reference to water reflections and use of ropes to tie up ships. The bespoke staircase with bleacher seating and step lighting became a central visual accent. Where possible the existing light fixtures were re-purposed and the linear layouts were adjusted to offer suitable lighting solutions for teaching spaces with flexible layouts and foldable glass partitions. The planting was accentuated with small lighting spots. Seating, breakout spaces, huddle and meeting rooms received additional decorative light fixtures that reflect the vibrant, colourful and energetic atmosphere of this collaborative learning hub.
