The 860-meter-long former steel factory with its distinctive basic structure, including the characteristic ventilation towers on the roof, will be retained and fitted out to accommodate the New Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts. With its approximately 220,000 square meters of gross floor area, the new art academy will include all important teaching facilities as well as studios, a publicly accessible forum with restaurants and retail areas, a library, sports facilities, a museum, and more exhibition areas. In the future, 600 teaching staff and 4000 students will teach and learn here. The use of daylight is one of the main design drivers for the interior design. Lichtvision designs an holistic and integrative artificial lighting scheme for all teaching, museum and office as well as retail areas.
